The duvet cover on our comforter was horrible and faded so I ripped it off and dumped it last spring. With winter around the corner I figured a new one was in order.
My bedroom is, however, in shambles right now since I'm getting ready to replace the carpet and redo the whole thing. I have no idea what I'm going to do in there, so it was important for the new cover to be 1. cheap and 2. neutral.
Here's what I came up with:
2 king size flat sheets (unfortunately I got the wrinkly kind, but oh well.)
This wonderful snap tape from Joanns. No buttonholes. Woohoo!
Ribbons on the inside of the cover and corners of the duvet, a la Martha
(Did you see her new stuff at Macy's!?!?!)
Not bad.
The only problem now is that the cover is really light and I have two really dark cats. I'm probably going to have to make a little blankie to cover this with and keep hair off the duvet because they're cats and guaranteed to find the softest spot in the house to shed on.

Oh, this is fantastic! I did not know about the snap tape but can see how super helpful it would be. And using Martha's ribbon idea in the corners would help keep the inner comforter from shifting about. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful project of yours.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking online for a new duvet cover for Fall and Winter. The problem is we have red night tables and light blue carpet. Right now I have a light blue with red roses (very Cath Kidston) but I can't find anything that looks right for Fall, etc. I'm thinking of making one also, but it's king-sized and sooooo big. Maybe I'll look one more time before I buy fabric or sheets. Thanks for the tips if I end up sewing. Love that snap tape!

That's beautiful! I might just have to make my own this year... I gave up on duvets and duvet covers a while ago because my husband says they're too hot. But in this case beauty will have to win over comfort. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI love your new duvet cover! Such a great idea to use that snap tape! I am going to bookmark this, because I know I am going to want to make a new cover at some point.
ReplyDeleteI love it! We need a new cover and this looks like the perfect idea. I would make a blanket for the cats to lay on. I have a blanket for my dogs to lay on at the end of the bed. Don't you just love snap tape. I made a bag using it and it was wonderful and the tape is soooo easy to use!!
ReplyDeleteSometimes simple = stunning. That's certainly the case here.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea! I was just thinking about making a duvet cover myself but didn't know how I was going to do it. Thank you for sharing this, I'm going to try it. :) I also like those Martha cake stands!
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect use of that snappy tape stuff.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I have a white dog and a black dog so I understand your hair dilemma. No matter what I do I can't win! :)
