I cleaned and sewed!

Cleaned a lot. Sewed a little.

The kitchen is clean!
I did not scrub the floor because it extends into different rooms and I'll just tack that onto another room. Makes sense, right?
Oh, and the junk drawer is now in a shopping bag. I'm going to go get some drawer organizers today.

What I learned:
We like beans
beans
and banana pudding.
pudding
There's an explanation for the pudding.

The most disconcerting thing about the whole kitchen cleaning experience was the vast amount of food I had to throw away. Some items had expired in 2003!
I need to find a way to organize the pantry cupboard so that I know what's in there.
Any suggestions?

As for the sewing:
Made a Dear Jane/That Quilt block
G-4
And the September SewConnected 3 block(s) for Ashley.
SewConnected 3 - September
Today I start bathroom day/week. Gosh I hope it doesn't turn into a week as well!

  1. It's amazing what lurks in the back of the pantry isn't it? There's always something back there that I think "where did this come from?!" Great job on the cleaning. And those blocks are so pretty!

  2. Good work. It does feel good to purge. I can't decide if I'm feeling motivated or defeated. I guess I need to work that out. I know I just need to get my butt out of this seat and get at least one thing accomplised today.

  3. Oh gosh, when we built a pantry in our mud room last year, and I moved all of our dry goods from the cupboards in the kitchen to the pantry, I found many, quite elderly things in it, but the most amazing was a box of Kraft Dinner that had an expiry date of 1997.

1997! I have two 14 year olds and a 19 year old who have ravening hordes for friends. How did that box survive? It should be in the Smithsonian! ;)

The good new is, this week, you won't find expired dry goods in your bathroom.

    (Or WILL you?) :D

  5. I'm so proud of you for reducing the stockpile! LOL I've been reading for a while...even though I'm not as busy as your life sounds, I find that if I sew a little and have to go into another room for something, I stop and clean up a bit in that area. As I move back into the sewing room, I get to sew. You can fudge this...but our house is tidy, sewing gets done and I'm happy! Keep up the good work!

  6. I love all your cleaning and organizing posts the last few days. So fun and amusing. It feels good in the fall to get things in order for winter.

P.s. I also saw on your book list you have read Peony! I am almost done and I love it. Although not quite as much as Snowflower and the secret fan.

  7. Well...tap...tap...tap...the banana excuse??? I LOVE that stuff! I'm afraid to tackle my pantry for just the reason you mentioned -- those awful expiration dates!

  8. Wow, you have motivated me to start eating this elephant of a house one bite at a time! Being a single mom and working 60 hours a week leaves me very little time for anything, but goodness knows I need to get this house under control!
Thanks for the inspiration you have given me!!

  9. A couple years ago I took it upon myself to reorganise my in-law's kitchen and we threw away an obscene amt of food! I don't really know a good way of organising it but I told her not to buy too much at once, and check expiration dates every few weeks.

Your blocks are gorgeous! I started a wonky star quilt last night with Heather Bailey and Amy Butler prints. Love wonky stars :)

  10. No suggestions on the pantry. I think I might have the same dilemma... ack! Now I am afraid to go in there. But at least you were able to sneak in a little sewing.

  11. I know that whenever I buy things that go in the pantry I *should* put the new stuff behind the old stuff, so that I'm not shoving the old stuff further and further back into the cupboard, but I always seem to be in a rush when I'm unloading the groceries, so more often than not, I just shove stuff wherever they seem to fit. But maybe with your new completely reorganized and neat cupboards, that might work for you? Good luck, and good for you on tackling the rest of the house!

  12. The wastage really makes you feel awful doesn't it? So glad you found some time for some sewing. Those patches are beautiful! At least the bathroom should be a lot easier. Certainly not that many packets hopefully!

  13. That's a lot of beans and pudding! At least chili season is coming up so you can use those beans. Good luck with the bathroom next. I love love love those star blocks for Ashley. I need to try those one of these days.

  15. go anina go! seeing people organize is so inspiring to me; can't look at too much of it, because it starts my OCD streak going and I want to start mass organizing/cleaning like you look like you're in the midst of. Always feels so good to get it done though! Bet it'll get your creative side really revved up, clearing out all that space. keep it up!

  16. My house could use the same attention that you've given yours. I like the organizing part better than the actual cleaning. That is a lot of pudding :)
I have the same problem with things expiring but don't have a good solution to offer other than move the older products forward when new ones are added, placing them in back.

  17. I hope all those beans and pudding don't go into the same recipe!
