Leaves in the Forest Quilt Along - Introduction

I'm SO excited to be making this quilt and hope to have a bunch of people go through the process with me!

I will be posting the instructions on this blog. There will possibly be instructional videos as well if I can get my act together.

The Pattern

The pattern we'll be using is my new Leaves in the Forest pattern.

All the blocks except the maple leaves are foundation (paper) pieced. The pattern does not include foundation piecing instructions but there are many tutorials online.

This is a good pattern for beginners because the segments are not too small.

The quilt finishes at 66" x 66".

Fabric Requirements

5 yards of  "background" fabric - I'm using Moda Grunge 30150-91 Vanilla.

1 Moda Grunge 12 Color Fabric Bundle - Fall/Autumn (0.5 yard size)

                                                    or

A total of 6 yards of fall colored fabrics of your choice

Foundation paper for printing or tracing the patterns

General Notes

The pattern includes an extra file with optional cutting instructions.  I will be using these as we go along.

You are welcome to use your own method but the fabric quantities are based on these instructions and you may need more fabric.

Leaves in the Forest Update

Just a quick check-in...

Today is the start of Week 2 of the Quilt-a-Forest Geese in the Forest quilt-along on Instagram. It's not too late to join in. There are prizes!

These are my blocks for Week 1.

I forgot to mention that I have a free tutorial for a maple leaf block on Craftsy. (Quilt and pattern kits are still available in the Etsy store.)

Leaves in the Forest Step 1

I get a huge amount of satisfaction from checking things off lists. I guess I get a kick out of seeing visual proof of my progress toward the end of any task.
My version of a "list" for the "Leaves in the Forest" quilt is a progress diagram. I'm ahead of the game right now, but I have a couple of trips planned in the next few months (did someone say Quilt Festival?!?!?), so I need to be proactive.

The goal for the first part of the Quilt a Forest quilt along is to make 6 of Block #1 by September 8th. Since I'm replacing some of the blocks with maple leaves, this meant 4 #1 Blocks and 2 Maple Leaves (and an extra one because I made the first one in the wrong color).

Quilt a Fall Forest

Wow! I'm not even going to attempt to commit to regular posting AGAIN. I'll try though.

As for right now, I'm in the middle of planning a new quilt, thanks to a quilt-along hosted by The Quilt Tree.
I've wanted to make another version of my Geese in the Forest pattern for a while now and this was just the kick in the butt I needed.

I decided on a Fall version with possibly a few maple leaf blocks scattered here and there.

My chosen fabrics are Moda Bella Solids (of course...).

I've added some kits to the Etsy store but, if you already have a Bella stash, the colors I'm using are as follows:

Leaf Green 9900 192
Clementine 9900 209
Saffron 9900 232
and for the background my current favorite Eggshell 9900 281

A little Shop Talk

The heat is letting off! Woohoo!

So many exciting things have been happening in the store that I just had to share, so please bear with me.

I just received a beautiful brand new fabric line - Pop Parade 2 - from P&B Textiles. When I saw this I fell in love with the free pattern for a wonderful, modern, fall-colored quilt.
I have all the fabric to make this quilt in stock (the pattern can be downloaded for free over here on the P&B Textiles web site).
I'm also assembling kits which will include all the fabric for the quilt and binding, as well as a free pattern sheet.

I'm very excited to announce that I will be carrying American Patchwork & Quilting magazine as well as Quilts & More from now on.
I know that it can be hard, especially for international quilters, to get their hands on these magazines, so I figured it would be a good idea to have some on hand.
The latest AP&Q mag is available right now - October 2009!
This one comes with a free pattern sheet for a scrap quilt designed by Alex Anderson.


I think I may be able to finish the sneakity peek project this weekend. Yay!
