So Sad!

This morning I was informed that my free Pinwheel Party pattern has been stolen by Lucky Charm Quilts in Chapman KS and they are passing it off as their own design and running it as a block of the month. They are even using my image and did not even bother to make their own quilt!

I'm not even sure how to react to this because I know from previous designers' experiences that there is not much that can be done legally to stop this kind of behavior.

It just saddens me that there are people in the quilting community who think it's OK to do this kind of thing. If they had contacted me and asked for permission to use the pattern I probably would have agreed.

Any suggestions are welcome and if you want to share this with your readers it may discourage this quilt shop(and other people considering doing this) from stealing designs that took someone weeks to put together.

Thanks for listing to my rant.

  1. Bummer! Did you contact them to confront them with their ‘theft’ of your pattern?
    I can’t find their website...?

  2. At a minimum, they need to give you credit. Since it is a free pattern, I don't know that there's much more you can demand from them. The website is: http://www.luckycharmquilts.com/

  3. Even though it's a free pattern, they've used your photo and that IS copyrighted. Write to them and demand some compensation

  4. I agree with the others - you should receive credit for the design AND since they used your photo that should be copyright infringement. Don't know about legally - but certainly ethically. Hope the word gets out that this is how they do business.

  6. That definitely sucks. Unfortunately there is very little you can do. I usually take preemptive action. I ask retailers who want to use my freebies for classes to send their customers to my site to download their own pattern. That way I sometimes get some credit. Better than nothing.

  7. I've just found your blog and I'm so sad, even i's been a year ago. Maybe you must tag your photos with tour name in wide format, like a... a big watermark accross your photo, in a transparent writing. I don' if you see what I mean, but I do that for my own photo.
