Oh, the doubt

I must be very insecure although you'd never be able to tell if you spoke to me.
This is the block I made for Amanda in the Virtual Quilting bee.

You can see the quilts she wanted us to use for inspiration over here.
I'm not fishing for compliments here. Please give me your honest opinion. Something about this block bothers me. See if you can tell what it is. I think I'm going to rip it up right now.

  1. it reminds me of a red cross flag or a swiss flag.....

  2. Nothing wrong, I love the combinations of the thick and thin!! And the block in the middle draws the eye - leave it as is!!

  3. Until you hinted at it I didn't notice, but since you brought it up...

I would solve the problem with appliqued yo-yos, but then I try to solve all problems with appliques yo-yos.

  4. well, that whole Zig Hail! thing, so um, yeah. The concept is pretty cool - maybe if you made ALL the lines big fat lines, instead of skinny ones?

  5. Yes, that. I'm redoing it right now.

  6. Yes, the swastika jumps out at me right away. Funny how things appear in patterns sometimes after we stand back and take a good look. I'm sure you'll find a new block to do or way to remedy it creatively.

  7. Your problem reminded me of a story: In eighth grade, a very smart exchange student in my class wanted to study the unique mathematical traits that make up a swastika.. the teacher couldn't argue the brillance, but he also couldn't let him keep drawing swastikas... It's a neat block, but I can't wait to see what you come up with instead. :-)

  8. Its very nautical. Keep going with it. I am liking the direction its taking.

  9. I like the general idea quite a lot. I was thinking that it would look less, um, swastika-y with some print sashing. Something that reads almost as solid red as the actual solid red, maybe? Or, you could increase the size of the center block and cross, give more focus to the center?

  10. In any other color combination this block would be very nice. I think it's just the red and the bright white that makes it off-puttingly nazi-esque. Save the pattern for another project.

  11. Wow, I would have never figured that out if I hadn't read the comments. I was liking the structure of it all. ;-(

  12. I noticed it too. Perhaps if the center sashing was an entirely different color? It's a GREAT block, we just need to figure out how to not make it representative of the Third Reich...

  13. Very unfortunate about the swastika. Many cultures (Native American, Hindu,Jainism, Buddhism, Christianity, etc.) have used it over time perhaps because the design in and of itself is pleasing. Check out this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika
I wish there was a way to "take back" this symbol.
